Montara Watches

Captain K. Rasmussen with his wife outside of Montara CA. USA ca. 1932

Captain Kristen Rasmussen, the great grandfather of one of the founders of Montara Watches, told me his story about a voyage he undertook from Denmark to America in 1932. He was the Captain of the bark “Mathilde” of Marstal under the Danish flag, which set sail for Anchorage Alaska on September 5.
In the beginning of their voyage the weather was pleasant with clouds and a fair wind. By the end of their voyage this had changed to harsh and cold with icy waters as they neared Anchorage on the coast of Alaska.
Once the Captain mentioned in a letter that time stood completely still as they neared Panama after the crossing the North Atlantic Ocean. When Mathilde had passed through the Panama Canal they reached the Pacific Ocean and sailed north along the shores of California. At one point Captain K. Rasmussen spotted the lighthouse of Montara near San Francisco.
This is the place Captain K. Rasmussen returned to on several occasions. He described Montara as a place of warmth and beauty, a special place with a beautiful view over the Pacific, where the sound of the waves hitting the shores was like a symphony. Montara was a place where time stood still and gave you peace of mind from the rough seas. There can be no doubt that Montara was a place close to Captain K. Rasmussen’s heart. The lighthouse was also a signal and a symbol to him that soon they would meet the cold winds from the north on their way to Anchorage and on the return, the warmth of the south.

On his return to Copenhagen Captain K. Rasmussen received a gold pocket watch from his superior for bringing Mathilde and its crew safely ashore. The ship had sailed through a storm, which had broken both masts.
